Trudging in Sludge

Hey all, and welcome back to the lab! Watch your steps this week: I've tracked a bunch of sludgy tar through the usually spotless lab atrium. Good thing I have more than one atrium, or atriums. (Atriui?) Anyway, the reason this sludge is ruining a perfect slate of cleanliness is attributed to a tricky trio of black rares that I've been studying lately. One of which, Thought Gorger, I've been juggling for a while now. Earlier this year I asked all you faithful readers to put your heads together and think ... (more)

All Over the Place

This week is going to be an eclectic review ... a little bit of this, and a little bit of that. And that is because the results are all over the place! Last week's Pro Tour–Amsterdam qualifier tournaments featured a wide variety of different qualifying decks; same format, more excitement, the Last Chance Qualifier down in San Juan featured four different—and in some cases "hot new"—strategies. Looking for a fun Extended deck with a wacky combo? How about trying Chester Li's Kiki-Jiki deck from the Top 8 of a Pro Tour Qualifier held in Boston? The combo is simple: cast Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and use it to copy Pestermite. The token untaps a permanent—Kiki-Jiki—and the 2/2 Goblin is free to make another copy of Pestermite. Repeat ad nauseam to create infinite Pestermite tokens with haste and attack! (more)

This is the Rise of the Eldrazi Fat Pack. Here is a handsome display of all the contents. Let's hit a few highlights. To the right, we've got a sample chapter of Zendikar: In the Teeth of the Akoum. Note that it's a sample chapter, even though it looks like it might be the full book in the picture there. It actually looks like this: There's also, of course, a spindown counter and eight boosters. For a better look at the boosters, check out yesterday... (more)

With a new set right around the corner, some of you might be wondering how we get from Worldwake to Rise of the Eldrazi. The answer is in "Awakenings," the comic that appeared exclusively in Path of the Planeswalker. Exclusively, that is, until now! So, in the interest of revealing a key plot point, here's Awakenings. Welcome back to the Lab! I like to write about kooky ways to play and think about Magic on Thursdays, and today's theme is especially exciting. Adventure Week is such a gloriously open-ended theme week that I originally was planning one of what I like to call my "out-there" columns. (Some examples of these would be my two-part saga of Bob from Accounting (Part 1, Part 2), and my Exiled Week column last year, which were in fact quite adventure-themed.) I eventually decided that, after a couple weeks dedic... (more)

Alex Winston won a recent Lincoln, Nebraska PTQ with my favorite Extended deck, Red-Green Valakut! Red-Green Valakut is not 100% as good, maybe, but it is pretty good in terms of an offensive creature deck. Kitchen Finks and Tarmogoyf + Umezawa's Jitte actually make it a favorable midrange vs. beatdown option against Zoo variants, The Rock, and so on. You can just get some Jitte counters and ride them like it's 2006. Or you can draw a Sakura-Tribe Elder into a Kitchen Finks and basically auto-win against... (more)

Even though I didn’t put up an impressive performance in San Diego the trip itself was great fun, and so I decided I would share my experience with the world. This is technically a tournament report, but I’m not a huge fan of monotonous round-by-round write-ups, and so it will focus more on what happened outside of the tournament than what happened in it. Red decks of all kinds are mainstays in Standard, but DustyStorm has a different take for Magic Online. A return to the days of Goblins was responsible for Dusty's 3-1 performance in a recent daily event. Featuring five representatives from the most chaotic of tribes, DustyStorm takes advantage of Warren Instigator's abilities. The deck also benefits from a healthy smattering of burn and heavy hitters like Ball Lightning and Hellspark Elemental. A great choice for heading off to Friday Night Magic this w... (more)

Welcome back to the Lab! Today it is my task to deliver some kooky ideas concerning lands that attack. I like this theme week not only because it means I can fully dive into Worldwake, but because it's flexible enough to apply to the attacking lands of sets past.
