Mistakes in Metagaming This season has been a complete bust for me results-wise, but I learned a few lessons about metagaming the proper way in the process. Today I’ll be covering what I could’ve done better in my attempts to metagame for my field and the thoughts I had in picking and modifying decks for PTQ play. First though, we’ll start with the basic concepts behind metagaming in the first place.... (more)

Rogue Report – Dear WotC: Open the (Data) Vaults by Jonathon Loucks Being a Magic player means a lot of things, including that you only get one day a week to sleep in: Sunday. Not that I’m complaining – I love getting up early on Saturday, gathering my things, and making my way to the tournament hall. The whole PTQ experience has become something I look forward to, but last Saturday I was a little burned out... (more)

The M10 Academy – Making Red Dead

featured 993 days, 12 hours, 56 minutes ago posted by SalivanthSalivanth 995 days, 19 hours, 43 minutes ago

This week in the Academy, we get the rest of the Red cards out of the way. We discover the difference between two and three, the difference between Lightning and Lightning, we Shatter some illusions, and preach the virtues of patience. Let's get started. Kindled Fury Plus point number one to this, is that it's Instant. From the other side of the table, even if you try to factor it into your combat calculations, what tends to happen is that you say, 'ok, if you have the Fury, my guy dies'. That make... (more)

This is going to be a smorgasbord this week, as we’ve all gotten over our big Thanksgiving dinner of Magic 2010 and are adjusting our belts to hold all the Christmas ham coming in Zendikar. (I realize that having a smorgasbord between Thanksgiving and Christmas seems counter-intuitive, but hey, you gotta keep eating. Ask any of those competitive-eating guys: keeping the stomach flexible and stretchy is the way to succeed.) The Good: Planechase The new casual multiplayer set comes out this weekend, and... (more)

Legacy's Allure - Reviewing GenCon

The GenCon results are in, and what a list it is! You can check them out here if you haven't seen them already. In this week's column, I'll be discussing the lists, both based on their individual strength as well as the inferences we can draw from its performance in the field. My Preliminary Thoughts First, there are 20 copies of Force of Will in the Top 8, meaning that there were five base-blue decks. If you don't already know that Force of Will is the card to have in Legacy, you know now. Your first ... (more)

A well respected Japanese pro, Shingou Kurihara recently padded his Pro Tour resume with a victory in the Limited format at Grand Prix–Bangkok. His white-blue deck was just powerful enough to get him there, with double Pacifism and Excommunicate containing his opponent's creatures while heavy hitters like Serra Angel got there in the air. For more about Shingou's win and the rest of the details from the event, visit the official event coverage. (more)

he Planechase Release Events are this weekend, September 4-6. Whee! There's more information about Planechase on the Planechase page, including full decklists. But there's one more card you haven't seen yet! Just for showing up and playing, each player will receive a Tazeem promo plane card (while supplies last). What's Tazeem? Oh, it's just a plane not included in any of the four Planechase decks, that's all. And it looks ... like this! (more)

Breaking Through - Commitment | ChannelFireball.com

Breaking Through: Commitment Walk into any card store in America, spend enough time there, and you are bound to hear the words, “Its just a game.” This may be in reference to Magic, or some other card game or miniatures game. And for some, I would guess even most, that is exactly what Magic occupies in their life; the role of a game. For others though, presumably yourself as you are reading a strategy website, Magic has the potential to be so much more. And even if that potential is never realized, the... (more)

Initial Technology - Drafting M10 in Boston | ChannelFireball.com

Drafting M10 in Boston At this point, it is pretty clear that I didn’t win GP: Boston, and the title certainly doesn’t refer to me doing any drafting in the GP itself. I’m not a huge fan of M10 Sealed, nor do I know many that are, but the draft format is both entertaining and good. I had plenty of time this weekend to do team drafts, and am now quite well acquainted with the drafting of Magic 2010. Tournament Report-Type Thing I opened a fairly mediocre to good sealed, with reasonable cards and not gr... (more)

Aug 27 2009 The Fallacy of the ‘Mythic’ Rare Just over a year ago Mark Rosewater, the Head Designer of Magic the Gathering wrote this lengthy article on some upcoming changes to the game we love. While so-called Change #1 is very important to MTG fans, especially the standard format loving ones, Change #2 is the focus here. It has been one year since Mythic rarity was introduced to the Magic playing public and the result has been lackluster.  The intended purpose of a new rarity was two-fold: make ... (more)

Flow of Ideas – Choosing Your Numbers a Magic: the Gathering Magic Fundamentals article

If you lose a game of Magic, you made a mistake somewhere. It can be in play, in mulligan decisions, or in deckbuilding. While a lot of people focus on the first two, deckbuilding errors, even minor ones, pile up over time and lead to a lot more game losses than people may realize. By building your deck better, you can give yourself the tools to play better. Of all the deckbuilding errors repeated every day, one-of the most egregious has to do not with the cards in the deck, but the quantity of each... (more)
