I had high hopes for Zendikar at the prerelease, and they panned out remarkably. I can’t remember being this excited for a Limited format in a long time. Zendikar has a lot of really interesting archetypes and dynamics, and between the different themes pushed in the set, solid fixing and acceleration, and aggressive creatures, there are a lot of ways you can take your deck. Ordinarily, my vanguard deck building process is to look at an avatar, think of what would go well with its ability, and go from there. Today's decks work backwards though. With each of these, I started with a regular card that I liked so much it made me scour the list of avatars to decide what would go well with it. (more)

Hello hello hello! Quite a week for MTGO. If you haven't heard.. we're getting PTQ's. Quite a few, actually! I think this is good news for MTGO but as always there's more than one side to every coin. This coin has two very varying sides. On the positive side this will assuredly bring more players into MTGO. On the scary side it underscores a lot of issues of collusion that have always plagued MTGO. I look forward to seeing the impacts that these announcements have for MTGO. (more)

Is it just me? I have noted, perhaps as you have too, the very interesting and controlled release of Zendikar spoilers and previews. More specifically, it of interest that clumps of cards were coordinated for simultaneous relase by Wizards to cater to showcase a specific group of cards, whether it was mono-black suck-heads last or goblins / red burn last week or all the mono-green love this week... A couple of weeks back I interviewed DCI program manager Scott Larabee about the 2010 Pro Tour schedule—a schedule which indicated that there would be PTQs taking place on Magic Online for the first time in the history of the Pro Tour. This time last year, a friend convinced me to go to Grand Prix: Denver. I didn’t want to go as the format was Lorwyn Block Constructed, a format I didn’t particularly care for. I didn’t have a deck I felt comfortable with, and overall I was floundering in a Grand Prix I had no real desire to play in. So why did I go? I just finished the book recently, and I must that it almost – almost reads like something you’d encounter in an English class. Seriously, it’s that deep IMO. Magic fiction is better than it’s ever been, with 3 great novels in a row. I look forward to the next Planeswalker novel, to feature Liliana Vess. The Purifying Fire is the second installment in the planeswalker series of novels, following Ari Marmell’s Agents of Artifice.
