If you have ever been to a decently large constructed Magic tournament, where you have to register your deck, you have been asked the question in no uncertain terms. What's in a name? That which we call Jund by any other name would play as sweet. It’s right there. Decks can sometimes come from the most off-handed and reckless thoughts or actions. It seems a fitting occurrence that such impulsiveness would get Goblins into my bag for a trip to our local store’s new “Playtest Tuesday” event. The plan was to have players gather at the store for a couple hours of building, trading, talk, and testing, followed by a brief casual three round swiss tournament. Here's what Zac Hill played at the Nashville, Tennessee event: The first is basically a Solar Flare deck that wants to throw as many huge guys at you as possible, while staying alive with Walls and two-mana blue disruption. The Elf list is basically Eldrazi Green with more hyper-combo-finish Growths. The Solar Flare deck was a little soft against any deck able to deploy a flurry of creatures early but performed well against Jund. The Eldrazi Green deck felt very powerful and was loads of fun to play! (more)

This time, I wasn’t going to be Jedi mind tricked so easily. I had an invitation to test at Dwayne St. Arnauld’s house the night before the PTQ. I was going to take both lists for a spin, play some games and then settle on whichever one I was most comfortable with. After a few hours of testing, I realized that both decks were quite good, but I liked the zoo deck a bit more, so I ran with it. I decided to give Doogle my Scapeshift deck and I would play zoo. Hall of Famer Zvi Mowshowitz would finally manage a Pro Tour win in Tokyo, but by the time he did he was as famous for his writing as he was for his decks.
