I have a PTQ coming up. I am probably going to play my two-for-one Cascade deck as detailed in Rhox Meditant Again (ironically with no Rhox Meditants… replaced them with Ajani Vengeant), but I wanted to work on a fallback deck that would require less processing power and allow me to play more quickly through a long tournament. Inspired by the standout G/W decks of Pro Tour Honolulu, I decided to explore, um, a different Rhox Mediatant deck. Steward of Valeron dot dec 2 Behemoth Sledge 4 Kitchen Finks ... (more)

I wasn’t playing control for a while since the latest shift in the Standard-Metagame made it impossible to continue with it. Alara Reborn was real bad news for 5cc. I tried to play Cruel Control anyway in a local PTQ for Austin and lost bad. To everything. As expected. But I didn’t drop after loss #3 because I payed to play 7 matches and I honestly don’t care about my DCI-rating. Congratulation to my wife. She almost made top 8 (4-3-0) with her DarkBant deck at the same PTQ. She was the only female of... (more)

Idea lovingly lifted from this thread at MTG Salvation. Progenitus is hilarious. Polymorph is awkward. Put ‘em together and… holy crap. I’ve developed two ways to go with this creation: blue-red with better alternate win conditions and blue-black with some Fae backup. Blue/Red version (more)

Hello my faithful readers, welcome to another edition. Last week, we looked at the commons and uncommons you should be digging out of old boxes for use now that they’ve been reprinted in Magic 2010. This week, I think it only makes sense to check out the commons and uncommons that you will want to snatch up playsets of at either your local Prerelease, Launch Party, or from friends or the Internet. Without further ado … (more)

Constructed Criticism - A Look at Standard for Nationals,

I was planning on writing an article about Limited today, but I feel as if Standard post-M10 needs a little bit more attention. It is the Constructed format for Nationals, and thus the most important to me. There are so many cards are leaving the format, destroying "established" decks but spawning very few new ideas. Losing 10 Painlands and gaining 5 other lands that don't tap for mana on turn 1 is going to change the face of the format completely. Hopefully once in the next few weeks I'll use Draft Reco... Sideboarding Jund Mana Ramp

The future of beloved Jund Mana Ramp is uncertain due to M10 coming soon (sadly I probably won’t even get to play it in its current form in a PTQ). However some friends have asked for a sideboarding guide. Here goes! For easy reference, here is the Jund Mana Ramp deck list I would play: 2 Makeshift Mannequin 3 Shriekmaw 4 Broodmate Dragon 4 Kitchen Finks 4 Chameleon Colossus 4 Civic Wayfinder 4 Cloudthresher 4 Rampant Growth 4 Banefire 3 Volcanic Fallout 4 Fire-Lit Thicket 8 Fo... With an intense look of concentration, the G/W player surveyed the board. He was locked in an Epic Struggle against a U/W Lark player, and the tide had shifted back and forth in a costly war of Attrition. Their graveyards were littered with the casualties. For the G/W, two Gaddock Teegs, Stonehewer Giant, Chameleon Colossus, a Path to Exile, and an assortment of elves had all begun to assume rigor mortis. For the Lark deck, no less than 4 Paths to Exile, Wrath of God, 2 Cryptic Commands, 3 Figure of Dest... (more)

Flow of Ideas – Reveillark: Now and in the Future

Everyone seems to know me as the Faeries guy, and, in all fairness, for good reason. Spellstutter Sprite has carried me to two Pro Tours and won me countless matches online. However, what’s far lesser known than my alignment with the winged menace is my affiliation with the Reveillark collective. Reveillark is a deck not talked about nearly enough, and it’s always been that way. It was one of the best decks to play last year in Time Spiral-Lorwyn Standard, and it’s one of the best decks you can be playin... (more)

Since I’m going up to Richmond Comix for Standard FNM this week, I thought I might touch on some choices for decks to play based on what we’ve been seeing from the PTQs and recent StarCityGames.com $5000 Standard Opens. However, looking over the Top 8 decklists has just gotten me depressed and angry all over again. Rant time? Nah. I’ve beaten that horse to death pretty effectively in the past couple a’ months (Standard Milkshake, The Good, the Bad & The Ugly). I’ve already laid out my case as to why ... (more)

From the land of Japan comes Erika Sudou’s Top 8 Rampant Growth control deck. Featuring some of the game’s most powerful spells, the deck is able to power them onto the table early thanks to a triple set of both Rampant Growth and Fertile Ground. After using Broodmate Dragon, Primal Command, or Cloudthresher? Why, Vengeful Rebirth just allows Erika to reload and do it again! (more)

The Magic 2010 design team created an excellent set that captured the feel of Magic's first card set, Alpha, and enriched it with years of experience in card design. The set has many cards that each give a translation of a single piece of fantasy into a viable Magic card. The development team balanced these cards, and the set as a whole, for a variety of play environments from Limited and casual play up to cutthroat competitive play. (more)

Adding a new twist to the Cascade Land Destruction decks that have begun popping up, Derrick Steel added Boomerang to his build, meaning he can start the hurt as early as the second turn. Before long, Cryptic Command, Rain of Tears, and Fulminator Mage are online, and shortly thereafter, opponents are feeling the Cruelest of Ultimatums! (more)

I’ve got something of a grab bag of items to discuss this week, including the StarCityGames.com $10000 Open weekend in Boston, the changes to the Vintage restricted list, and the M10 rules changes. Let’s get right to it! Boston $5K – Standard (6/20) I’ll be honest: I played a grand total of three Standard games between Regionals and this $5K. After Regionals, Elves has gone from a niche deck to a significant player in the format. I played almost the exact same 75 from Regionals (-1 Thoughtseize, ... (more)

This article is written assuming that you've seen the spoiler for M10, as a lot of these cards are "spoiled" but not confirmed. As of writing this article, over 200 of the cards in M10 have been spoiled on MTG Salvation. While these cards are suspect to change since they are mostly based upon rumors, I have found that MTG Salvation usually gets it pretty close to right when it comes to the new sets. Even if they get a card's text or name wrong, you get a general idea of what that particular card does. Wi... (more)

Having a Lark in Standard

Standard is as awesome as this articles title is cheesy and unfunny. I almost always hate every format (and everything in general), but it really is a great format right now. There are lots of decks, sweet interactions, awesome match-ups, and it is very skill intensive while maintaining a cultivating atmosphere for creativity. A very interesting balance that has become increasingly rare. (more)

While GP: Seattle was a while ago, the lessons learned there still apply today. And while I may not be a true master yet, when you play Faeries it doesn't really matter. It took me long enough, but I've definitely converted to the Church of Cryptic Command. When a clearly superior strategy exists, you better have a really, really good reason to not play it. From when Morningtide was released to when Conflux was, I just didn't play Faeries. GP: Seattle was only my fifth event played with the deck out of t... (more)

Winning the SCG Atlanta $5000 Standard Open

After winning the StarCityGames.com $5000 Standard Open in Atlanta, I decided I might as well write something about it. I’m Chris Greene. I’ve played in a few Pro Tours, where I’ve mostly posted spectacularly average finishes but once done fairly well (Kuala Lumpur, where I finished 13th). That finish plus some consolation PT points from Hollywood and Grand Prix Atlanta means I’m a Level 2 Pro and thus qualified for Nationals, which is kind of why the deck was built in the first place.
