Shuhei. Gindy. Gindy won the only Pro Tour Top 8 he played in. Shuhei has five Sunday appearances, but no titles. Now they can both add National Champion to their respective resumes. Both piloted decks featuring Cruel Ultimatum through 17 rounds of Magic (albeit "only" 11 rounds of Constructed) and came out on top. While they chose the same deck, they were choosing a weapon for significantly different battlefields.... (more)

I’ve just finished drinking a beer from a trophy. That's what I did today. And let me just say that beer has never tasted so sweet. The smooth taste topped with the metallic finish....actually, I'm not going to do this. About 20 people or so tried to get me to just say “Scoreboard” as my entire article. I think that would have been a bit foolish, as well as immature, so I think I'll write a little more. My trip to Nationals started a few months ago, with me sitting on my rating until the cutoff. I m... (more)

Three more National Championships have hit the books, and in light of these and other recent tournament events, we can start to make some pretty bold claims. Like: "Five-Color Control is the best deck in the format." (more)

Flow of Ideas – How to Win a Nationals Grinder

Elves, eh? It’s Pro Tour: Berlin, and combo Elves has its breakout performance. People not paying attention to the format are completely caught off guard by the deck, and people paying attention to the format are caught off guard by its popularity. The tournament comes and goes, and Elves clearly asserts its dominance as the deck to beat. Pleas for emergency bannings are had, and Elves clearly seems as though it is the only deck to play. So what happened? The format overcorrected itself. Did y... (more)

Normally I would write some kind of an opening paragraph, maybe make some kind of clever comments, but this week we have roughly DI deck lists to look at, including not just some wild new strategies but exciting M10 takes on some established designs ... and DI of them. All of that, plus my Hall of Fame ballot. (more)

If you have not already checked out the coverage of Spanish, Japanese and Australian Nationals for fresh from the oven M10 Standard tech, you should do so right now. The Elvish Archdruid-powered Combo deck took the top spot in Australia and dominated the Japanese event with three Top 8 finishes although Shuhei Nakamura hoisted the trophy with Cruel Control. Cruel Control also won Spanish Nationals with nary an Elf Combo deck to be found in the elimination rounds. Based on a handful of Twitter comments i... (more)

Playing in his first ever National Championships, Jamie Mackintosh stormed the Top 8 with his Green/White Elves Combo deck, and will lead the Australian National Team at the World Championships in Rome later this year. Joining him after a heart-breaking loss in the finals with his 5 Color Blood deck, will be fellow newcomer Ian Wood, and top 8 veteran Hugh Glanville, who played Faeries. With Nationals fast approaching here in the U.S. as well as plenty of PTQs still on the horizon, standard is hard pressed not to be on everyone's minds. M10 ushers in a new era in core sets and is sure to be the most impactful core set of all time. Between rules changes, policy changes, new cards, and staggering reprints (along with some cards not being reprinted), standard appears to radically change with this set, leaving only a handful of current decks to survive the rotation. Today I would like to go... (more)

This past weekend I finished fourth at Malaysian Nationals. Our top two finishers, Joe Soh (Terry’s brother) and Weng Sheng, are previous National Champions, and I expect an excellent showing this year at Worlds - potentially even topping last year’s very strong fifth place. They gave us trophies. The trophies were nice but contained Foil Voidslimes… Why did the trophies contain foil Voidslimes? Nevertheless, they were trophies and were therefore awesome. It was nearly impossible to venture into the hote... (more)

Constructed Criticism - A Look at Standard for Nationals,

I was planning on writing an article about Limited today, but I feel as if Standard post-M10 needs a little bit more attention. It is the Constructed format for Nationals, and thus the most important to me. There are so many cards are leaving the format, destroying "established" decks but spawning very few new ideas. Losing 10 Painlands and gaining 5 other lands that don't tap for mana on turn 1 is going to change the face of the format completely. Hopefully once in the next few weeks I'll use Draft Reco...
