M10 Draft Report - LSV Drafts Red Beatdown [VIDEO]
MTG pro and top five player in the world, Luis Scott-Vargas (aka LSV), drafted a pretty crazy deck in the 8-4 M10 draft queue on Magic Online. If you know anything about him, this deck is quite a departure from his normal drafting strategy. He tends to draft control decks, but this time he did an experiment by drafting a nearly mono red very aggressive deck with two Jackal Familiars and two Raging Goblins. Draft and Decklist (more)

Pauper Rats
Pauper is a popular Magic Online format that allows players to use only commons when building their decks. The result? SlashRus recently used Rats, of all things, to succeed in the format. Both Chittering Rats and Crypt Rats saw play front and center alongside black's most powerful common removal like Tendrils of Corruption. Add some card drawing in the form of Mulldrifter and you've got a recipe for success! (more)

Jund decks have been popular in Standard for some time. But Dev used this list to win a recent Premier Event on Magic Online. The format? Kaleidoscope, which requires all players use cards that are multi-colored. Savage Twister and Terminate keep the board cleared, while spells like Anathemancer and Lavalanche punish opponents in the late game. As a backup? No less than Broodmate Dragon to sweep things up in the air! (more)

Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #282 - Expected Value of Draft Queues
For online play, Wizards offers three different draft queues, offering different payouts, for each block. The 8-4 queue is single elimination, and pays 8 packs to the winner and 4 to the second place finisher. The 4-3-2-2 queue is also single elimination, but pays less to first and second, but pays third and fourth two packs each. Finally, 321Swiss queues offer Swiss drafts and pay out one pack per match win. The Expected Value calculations say the most popular format has the worst EV. What’s going on? (more)

Magic Online can be such a tricky system. I’ve been using it since Kamigawa Block for leisurely in-home drafting, where I can play any number of 4-3-2-2’s not because I distrust my skill at Limited but because sometimes, just sometimes, while I’m in the middle of a draft I decide to go do something else like go out for ice cream with my girlfriend. I’d rather not feel tied to the computer for another hour if a better leisure activity appears (... like staying in with my girlfriend...) when I’m trying to ... (more)

So last night, after wrangling my daughter to sleep I decided to do a little testing on MtGO. I didn’t have a ton of time and I was pretty tired, so I didn’t jump in an 8-man Standard queue and opted for the wonky Tournament Practice room instead. Alara Block Constructed is a relevant format for Magic Online, and I've been playing a lot of it since Pro Tour: Cascade... erm, Honolulu.
