In 1998, Pro Tour-Rome was defined by two cards: Time Spiral and Tolarian Academy. One player who decided to make a go of things without either was Frenchman Nicolas Labarre. His Fish build was good enough to get second, powered by Force of Will, Curiosity, and cheap blue creatures. He could plop a few threats onto the battlefield, then counter his opponent's most relevant spells long enough to attack for the win! (more)

On first read, many players thought Hatred was a junk rare. It didn't take long for people to realize that a first-turn Carnophage followed by two Dark Rituals into Hatred meant a second-turn kill! Suicide Black, already a popular aggro deck of the day, quickly incorporated the windfall of a strategy into its main deck.
