Let the Good Times Draft

The most magical part of slinging cards for me isn't usually the game, but rather the surrounding stories—everything from lucky topdecks to bad beats, and the cool plays in between. Sure, Magic is fun to play, but what keeps us coming back is the camaraderie ... and the oh-my-god-I-just-bluffed-him-right-out-of-the-match excitement that, quite frankly, can be contagious. (more)

M10 Draft Tournament Report (M10 Launch Party)

I just played in an M10 draft for the M10 Launch Party. We had eight players and we did three rounds of swiss with a cut to the top two. Basically, it was single elimination unless people get draws. The two undefeated players after round two can just draw and be the top two players after the three rounds. I opened Shivan Dragon. For pick two, I got passed a Serra Angel. In pick three, I took Doom Blade. Pick four was Howling ... (more)

That’s right folks, this will be my last stats article of twenty drafts at a time. Click the link for all the gory details. Most likely from now on, I will probably do these stats articles every fifty drafts instead. I will also have a stats article for the entire first 100 drafts some time in the near future. For now though, twenty drafts… (more)

"I don't know how I was ever supposed to beat him. He had Overrun." –Steve Sadin, 2001, right after losing in the Finals of triple Odyssey 8-person booster draft ot all cards are created equal. In many formats, I'm more than happy to pay five mana for a 3/2 or a 3/3 flier. There have been plenty of formats where a creature with those kinds of stats was an easy first pick. Air Elemental and Serra Ange... (more)

Prereleases for the new core set, Magic 2010, are happening around the world this weekend. After that, Launch parties on the 16-18th will be where most of the FNM crowd will be spending their dough. That weekend also marks the end of 10th Edition as the core set in Standard, with M10 functioning for the next 15 months, until it rotates in October-ish of 2011. With that in mind, today we’re going to examine M10 from a variety of different angles, starting with Limited. (more)

Hate to cut out all of the fanfare, but… here you are. I’m actually a little “meh” about the last three colors as far as Limited is concerned. White and Blue are easy to get interested in because one is obviously very easy to play while the other is obviously very difficult, while the other three are just… pretty straightforward. This isn’t to say they are bad or completely uninteresting, it’s just that they pretty much play like before except with l... (more)

Cube drafting is the most popular pastime to be cubic since Emo Rubik sprang his eponymous Cube onto the world. Magic players have long embraced variant formats, most of which are casual in nature. From Elder Dragon Highlander to 5-Color to Cube, you can see these formats played at the back tables of big events, or at the paint-stained tables of your local game store. Cubing is easy, fun, and will attract many players. And unlike Rubik’s Cube, you don’t have to deal with Rubik’s Revenge when you maste... (more)

A lot of talk lately has surrounded the idea of various draft archetypes in Shards Block draft. Everyone seems to have their own idea of what the best or at least, best for them, archetype is and the answers tend to land either in Esper, G/W Aggro, G/R Aggro, and the occasional Grixis control deck. Now while I cannot fault any of these strategies as they all can and have produced winning results, it may come as little surprise to you that whenever I am asked what my favorite draft strategy is, I default ... Yawgmoth’s Whimsy #282 - Expected Value of Draft Queues

For online play, Wizards offers three different draft queues, offering different payouts, for each block. The 8-4 queue is single elimination, and pays 8 packs to the winner and 4 to the second place finisher. The 4-3-2-2 queue is also single elimination, but pays less to first and second, but pays third and fourth two packs each. Finally, 321Swiss queues offer Swiss drafts and pay out one pack per match win. The Expected Value calculations say the most popular format has the worst EV. What’s going on? (more)

Attention Magic-playing furs:  I am running an Alara Block draft at Anthrocon! I will have enough product to run three eight-player drafts, and if there is enough interest to generate a fourth, there is a comic shop not far from the convention center where I will buy more packs.  The drafts will be run single-elimination (but that doesn't mean you can't keep playing after you're out).  Prize ...
