Alex Winston won a recent Lincoln, Nebraska PTQ with my favorite Extended deck, Red-Green Valakut! Red-Green Valakut is not 100% as good, maybe, but it is pretty good in terms of an offensive creature deck. Kitchen Finks and Tarmogoyf + Umezawa's Jitte actually make it a favorable midrange vs. beatdown option against Zoo variants, The Rock, and so on. You can just get some Jitte counters and ride them like it's 2006. Or you can draw a Sakura-Tribe Elder into a Kitchen Finks and basically auto-win against... (more)

A return to the days of Goblins was responsible for Dusty's 3-1 performance in a recent daily event. Pauper is a fun format for Magic Online that prohibits the use of rares, mythic rares, and uncommon, requiring players to build entire decks using only commons. Baldr7 was up to the task, putting together this black-green madness / graveyard deck. Powerful spells like Wild Mongrel allow madness spells like Grave Scrabbler to hit the battlefield on the cheap. In Toronto, Charles Trottier managed to find himself in the Top 8 of his local Pro Tour Qualifier for San Juan with this take on a proto-Storm combo deck. Instead of Pyromancer's Swath, Trottier opted for Pyromancer Ascension, allowing him to create numerous copies of his spells for free. Is this an Extended one-hit wonder, or will Charles's deck begin tearing up the PTQ scene? (more)

The 2009 Magic Game Day was a smashing success! All over the world players tried their hands at the new world of Zendikar Standard. In Austria, Paul Gelautz opted to battle with Jund, but with an added twist: discard creatures. A twin-set of Specters of the Sedraxis and Hypnotic variety helped keep an opponent's hand devoid of answers while Madrush Cyclops helped make the entire team a turn faster by granting all Paul's creatures haste. Brian "The Dragonmaster" Kibler finally managed to add a Pro Tour title to his already impressive resume! He did the deed at Pro Tour–Austin, taking an innovative Zoo list to the title. The deck was built by Hall of Famer Ben Rubin and featured Baneslayer Angel and the combo of Grove of the Burnwillows and Punishing Fire. Pro Tour coverage reporter and The Week That Was columnist Brian David-Marshall has been brewing all sorts of decks for the world of new Standard. The above list is his take on a Warp World deck that features Ob Nixilis, the Fallen. When the legendary black creature enters the battlefield after Warp World resolves, he forces the opponent to lose 3 life for each land entering with him.
